Bluegill Fishing Reports for 2007

I don't get to go fishing as often as I would like lately as I'm going to start going back to college, so I'm starting this page to document my successes and failures when I go on my bluegill fishing trips. Trips will be listed in reverse chronological order. This means the newest bluegill fishing trips will be listed at the top.

Pre-Trip
We're going on a fishing trip to Centralia Lake in Southern Illinois. We'll probably start out with some good old fashioned bluegill fishing and then we'll switch over and try to catch some catfish. We're going to be using live baits such as crickets, red wiggler worms, and wax worms. Those are the baits for the bluegill. We're going to be using jumbo shrimp for the catfish.

Post Trip
Well the trip was pretty dissapointing for me personally but my father and grandfather had a pretty good time. Personally, I only caught maybe 4 bluegill as the fishing was very slow. My dad caught a 2lb channel catfish though and some bluegills. My grandfather had the most fun when he landed a 7lb channel catfish that put up a great fight. That was pretty fun for me to watch. The weather was pretty hot and humid so I think the bluegill were hiding out deep so the bluegill fishing wasn't so good for anyone. We decided mainly to try to land a massive catfish for the thrill. Even though I personally got basically skunked it was still a pretty good fishing trip.

Pre-trip
I'm going on a bluegill fishing and crappie fishing trip this afternoon. I just purchased fifty crickets and two dozen minnows. Hopefully we'll have a good time and catch a lot of bluegill. Last fishing trip I basically got skunked besides for a baby largemouth bass. I figure with the minnows we might even catch some decent largemouth bass by accident but our primary goal is bluegill and crappie.

Post-trip
It was a pretty good fishing trip. I'll list the amount and kinds of fish I caught below.

Bluegill: Sixteen
Bass: Two
Catfish: One

I caught all of these fish on crickets. As you can see it turned out to be a fairly decent bluegill fishing trip. We went out there for three and a half hours which was when my father ran out of minnows and I ran out of crickets. I don't know my father's exact totals, but he caught two catfish, several small bass, and a good number of bluegill on the minnows. I was surprised to catch a catfish on a dead and soggy cricket but it put up a good fight on my light rod. Two bluegill swallowed the hooks and unfortunately, I believe they died because they were bleeding badly when I had to cut the line. All in all it was a great bluegill fishing trip. Twenty times better than the last one anyway. Definitely going to be sticking with live bait to catch bluegills from now on, even though they are a lot more work.
